Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that causes numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and wrist. At Sukumvit Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Center, we provide comprehensive assessment and evidence-based rehabilitation programs to relieve symptoms, restore hand function, and prevent progression. Early treatment is essential to avoid long-term nerve damage.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel — a narrow passageway in the wrist formed by bones and ligaments.
Increased pressure within this tunnel can irritate the nerve, leading to sensory and motor symptoms in the hand.

Common Symptoms

Patients with CTS may experience:
• Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger
• Hand weakness
• Difficulty gripping objects
• Dropping items frequently
• Wrist pain that may radiate up the forearm
• Night-time symptoms that disturb sleep
• Burning or “pins and needles” sensation
Symptoms often worsen with prolonged wrist use, such as typing or holding a phone.

Common Causes

• Repetitive hand and wrist movements
• Prolonged computer or mouse use
• Poor ergonomic setup
• Pregnancy (fluid retention)
• Diabetes
• Thyroid disorders
• Inflammatory conditions
• Wrist injuries

Who Is at Risk?

• Office workers
• IT professionals
• Factory workers
• Cashiers
• Individuals with repetitive manual tasks
• Pregnant women
• People with metabolic conditions

Why Early Treatment Is Important

If left untreated, CTS may lead to:
• Permanent nerve damage
• Persistent numbness
• Loss of hand strength
• Muscle wasting in the thumb
• Reduced functional ability
Early physiotherapy can reduce nerve compression and improve recovery outcomes.
